What is Daily Sunshine?

Why is Daily Sunshine for ages 4 and older?

The FDA established the general Recommend Daily Intake (RDIs) based on children and adults 4 years old and up. Daily Sunshine was designed with the needs of this group in mind. While Daily Sunshine is a food (like cereal, snack foods, almond milk, etc.), children under the age of 4 are considered infants and toddlers who have their own specific dietary needs.  Just like other food choices, parents should make their own decisions based on their unique child and information from their healthcare provider.

How many grams of sugar are in each serving?

There are 7 grams of sugar in Chocolate and 8 grams in Strawberry Banana. To put this into perspective, there are 14 grams of sugar in a banana and 19 grams of sugar in an apple. The 4 to 5 grams of naturally occurring sugar in Daily Sunshine comes from ingredients in the product, like fruit powders. That leaves 3 grams of added sugar from organic cane sugar. That’s 12 calories, or 3/4 of a teaspoon, which is only 6 percent of the Daily Value for added sugar.

Organic cane sugar is the third item on the ingredients list, so why does it also contain stevia?

Without stevia, which is a plant-based sweetener, Daily Sunshine would need to contain much more added sugar to deliver the same kid-approved taste! We made a conscious effort to keep added sugars low while satisfying the taste buds of our pickiest eaters. Is there caffeine in Daily Sunshine?

Chocolate Flavor Daily Sunshine has organic cocoa powder and natural chocolate flavor. Because caffeine is a constituent of cocoa and chocolate, Daily Sunshine may also have some caffeine — but in very small amounts. To put this into perspective, according to the USDA, a cup of hot chocolate (made from cocoa) contains five milligrams of caffeine, while a cup of brewed coffee contains 95 milligrams of caffeine.

If you have concerns about low levels of caffeine, you may want to use Strawberry Banana Flavor Daily Sunshine.

Where is the natural chocolate in Daily Sunshine derived from?

The natural chocolate flavor in Daily Sunshine is a secret recipe containing cocoa, vanilla bean extract, & other tasty ingredients – a delicious blend crafted for chocolate lovers!

Is it safe for kids with celiac disease or peanut/tree nut allergies?

Daily Sunshine meets the gluten-free definition set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which sets a gluten limit of less than 20 parts per million (ppm) for foods labeled “gluten-free.” This limit was established by the FDA since it stated that “most people with celiac disease can tolerate foods with very small amounts of gluten.”

In addition, there are no peanut or tree nut ingredients in Daily Sunshine, and we take significant precautions to prevent any nut-based ingredients from being included in the product.

Every lot of Daily Sunshine is tested for gluten to ensure the product meets this gluten-free standard. In addition, we follow strict FDA Good Manufacturing Practices in creating Daily Sunshine, which includes thorough cleaning and sanitation of all equipment and surfaces the product comes in contact with prior to producing Daily Sunshine.

However, because some consumers may have extremely sensitive reactions to major allergens, such as gluten or wheat, Beachbody wants to be as transparent as possible. This is why we include a statement which you see on many food products today — that Daily Sunshine is made in a plant that also processes eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, and wheat ingredients.

It also contains a vast array of other nutrients, but given how wide-ranging and exotic they are, they don’t fit as neatly into a specific container. Daily Sunshine, on the other hand, contains less protein (10 grams), so ½ red makes sense. It also contains the equivalent of a full serving of fruits and vegetables.* Because this is done using a combination of both types of produce, the most accurate representation is ½ purple and ½ green.

Healthy Benefits of Nuts

Are you crazy about NUTS?

 

Admittedly, I am.  I love nuts!  And, I know that there is a lot of nutrition value associated with nuts.  However, I have never really done the research myself.  I have just always been told, “Nuts are good for you.”  And, I don’t always believe everything I am told, but in this case I know it’s true.  I don’t just love nuts for their nutritious value, I love nuts because they taste great and I honestly like the way they crunch when I eat them!

 

We eat a lot of nuts in our house.  Not only do I love them but my husband does and my kids do as well.  We love all kinds of nuts and we keep a nice variety stocked in our pantry.  They are easy to grab on the go, they make an easy (and nutritious) snack, they add nicely to salads and other dishes.  Yes, we like nuts!

 

I decided to do a little research, just to firm up what I already know about nuts.  But, I thought other people might benefit from what I learn.  So here are the quick details about some of the Corum Crew’s favorite nut options:

 

ALMONDS High in monounsaturated fats (those are the good fats!), magnesium, and vitamin E.  They are alkalizing to the system when eaten raw and soaked in water.  Huh?  That means, and this is good, when your body is in a healthy alkaline balance then germs are less likely to get a foothold.  Eat almonds!

WALNUTS Great for brain power and heart health.  They are high in omega-3s, and they help to heal imbalances caused by acidic, inflammatory foods.  My husband has a slight allergy to walnuts…poor him!

 

CASHEWS Oh…One of our real favorites!  They contain 0 (that’s ZERO) cholesterol.  Cashews are loaded with magnesium which helps diminish the frequency of migraines, improves cognitive ability, and lowers blood pressure.  A handful of cashews a day is said to keep depression at bay!  Also, cashews contain (ok this is a really long word and I can’t even begin to pronounce it!) proanthocyanidins, a flavanol that inhibits the ability of cancer cells to divide and multiply, reducing incidences of colon cancer.  And, another benefit of cashews is that you can soak them and puree them to use as a natural thickener for soups, stews and sauces!

 

PECANS As a native Texan, this really is the BEST of the nut varieties.  Guess what the state tree is for Texas?  Yup!  The Pecan Tree!  They are a rich source of energy which help to protect the body from diseases, cancers and infections.  They are loaded with vitamin E, plus vitamin B-complex, magnesium, zinc, calcium, iron, and potassium.

 

PINE NUTS These little meaty-flavored nuts help diminish appetite and balance hormones.  High in protein and amino acids, pine nuts are an excellent source of B vitamins.  They also boost energy, reduce heart disease risk, provide anti-aging antioxidants (really!), and improve vision health   And, they grow on pine trees!  You find the nuts between the scales of pine cones.  

 

MACADAMIA These are native to Australia and they are delicious, but can be a bit expensive.  Another nut that boosts energy, macadamia nuts also provide 23% of daily recommendation levels of dietary fiber.  They are also used widely in gluten-free food formulations.  These sweet refreshing nuts provide essential minerals, vitamins, and heart-friendly good fatty acids.

 

In short, it’s okay to be a little nutty!  Not only do they provide great health benefits, but nuts taste great!  There you have it!  Nuts are a good thing!  I want to share a nut filled recipe I think you will enjoy as much as my Corum Crew does!

Nutty Texan Living in Colorado Trail Mix

½ Cup Raw Almonds

¼ Cup Raw Walnuts

½ Cup Raw Cashews

½ Cup Raw Pecans

¼ Cup Raw Pine Nuts

¼ Cup Raw Macadamias

1 Cup Unsweetened Organic Coconut Flakes

½ Cup Unsweetened Organic Dried Cherries

½ Cup Unsweetened Organic Dried Cranberries

½ Cup Raw Organic Pumpkin Seeds

½ Cup Raw Shelled Sunflower Seeds

1 Cup Dark Chocolate Chunks

½ Tsp Pink Himalayan Sea Salt

1 Tbs Liquid Coconut Oil

½ Tsp Cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Combine all nuts and seeds together in a large bowl, add coconut, salt, coconut oil and mix well. Spread out over a baking pan.  Toast in oven for about 10 minutes, keeping a close watch so the mixture does not over toast or burn.  Remove from oven and cool completely.   Dump nuts and seeds into a large bowl and add dried cherries and cranberries, dark chocolate chunks and sprinkle with cinnamon.  Mix well.  Hit the trail!

What are your Kids having for Lunch?

What are your kids having for lunch?

What’s for LUNCH?  Let’s start thinking differently about how we are feeding our kids!

 

Are you paying attention to what your kids are eating for lunch?  Do you prepare a lunch at home for them to take to school or are they purchasing a meal from their school cafeteria?  There are pictures circulating around the internet comparing a school lunch from the USA to other countries.  And, the photos are pretty startling.  If you think about the average restaurant here in our country and the portions they serve, along with the options available, then you probably won’t be surprised to see what may appear in the lunch line at the school cafeteria.

I would say this is actually pretty typical for an American kid…chicken nuggets with ketchup, along with some potatoes, a green vegetable, fruit cup and let’s not forget the cookie!  But, when you compare what kids from other countries are eating you might be surprised to discover the difference in nutrition of what they are eating compared to our kids.

I can’t believe kids from other countries are deprived of a cookie for lunch!  (Sarcasm!  Sorry, but not sorry!)

 

Our kids are in school on average for about 7 hours a day, 5 days a week.  School requires a lot from our children.  A good nutritious meal in the middle of the day is a requirement.  Nourishing our students with fresher, greener and more nutrient rich foods will provide them with more focused energy, better growth potential, immune system boosters and mental clarity.  

 

Unfortunately, our food system is dominated by unhealthy, artificially enhanced processed “stuff” and our children are consuming it!  Childhood obesity continues to grow rapidly and we are not seeing enough change.  This will lead to long term health consequences that will not only shorten their lives but give them a lives dominated by risks, higher health costs and emotional pain. This absolutely breaks my heart.

 

We have to put a stop to this now.  It really is about educating ourselves as parents and our children.  If we all pay a little more attention to what we are feeding our kids and the types of foods they have access to when they are not directly in our care, then we can make a difference.  We must teach our children about nutrition so they are equipped  to make better choices when they are not with us. If you start now with your younger children they will understand and are more likely to choose healthier foods.   Sure, it takes a little more planning and preparation, but aren’t our kids worth it?  And you are worth it too!

 

Our kids are in middle school and high school.  So, in our home, we prepare lunches.  We pack a protein, a carb, a vegetable, a fruit and a snack.  My kids know our expectations and we understand that sometimes they want a treat.  We include them in the preparation.  It’s all in MODERATION.  Are their lunches perfect?  No, but there is a daily conscious effort to ensure that their lunch is balanced and nutritious.

 

My kids know that we read ingredient labels.  Our rule is if the label has more ingredients than you can count with a glance or if you cannot pronounce any of the ingredients, then Mom and Dad are probably not going to buy it.  They enjoy shopping with us and they look to find healthier alternatives that we may agree to try.  In fact, sometimes we find items in the cart that we are removing at the checkout line.  Yes, they try and sneak some snacky junk in when we aren’t paying attention.  And, we do give in every now and then!  Not often, but sometimes.  

 

There really are a lot of options out there if you take the time to look or research.

 

Small changes add up over time. Here are some easy lunchbox swaps you can make to boost the health of your kiddos.

  • Instead of chips try adding veggies + hummus or a slice of cheese. veggie + peanut butter (or almond butter)
  • Instead of cookies, pack a piece of fruit or protein bar (Have you tried RX Bars?  Simply made and delicious.  Check them out!)
  • Instead of pudding, add yogurt. (maybe add granola too)
  • Instead of candy,  add some nuts, small pieces of dark chocolate and dried fruit. (healthy trail mix)
  • Kids who don’t like sandwiches? Try hard boiled eggs or lunch meat rollups instead. Cottage cheese is a good protein too.

Another idea is to invest in a quality thermos so you can send heated leftovers or soup to school.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to START taking steps in a new direction for better health.  Your kids might revolt if you revamped their entire lunch bag overnight. Younger kids, you may have a better shot on changing things up now.  

Involve them–get them to choose their healthy swaps for the week!  Just remember, those small changes have big health impacts!
